Tilt-A-Whirl
Classic Tilt-A-Whirl
Take a sweet spin on an ice *scream* cone!
Climb into a scoop of Sweet Shoppe ice cream for a sweet spin around! This classic amusement ride is the perfect pairing to treats at The Sweet Shoppe, located just across the midway. The Tilt-A-Whirl consists of seven ice cream-themed cars that rotate on individual tracks. The cars are mounted on a large cable-driven turntable, which also rotates.
History
Herbert W. Sellner of Faribault, Minnesota invented the Tilt-A-Whirl in 1926. The popularity of rides in the 1920s caused Sellner to build this new ride for use at Wildwood Park in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
The Tilt-A-Whirl was so successful that a factory was built in 1927 to mass-produce the ride. Today 70 million people a year enjoy Tilt-A-Whirls throughout the world, including the one in Belmont Park.
The Tilt-A-Whirl at Belmont Park, which Sellner Manufacturing built for the San Diego Coaster Company in 1995, was originally a nautically themed version of the ride with bright marine colors and sea horses adorning the car.
